Underemployment rose to 19.0% in December

Underemployment rose to 19.0% in December,
up from 17.2% at the end of November

The increase in Gallup's U.S. unemployment rate and the worsening in the percentage of part-time workers wanting full-time work combined to raise underemployment to 19.0% in December from 18.5% in mid-December and 17.2% at the end of November.

Reb wonders how widespread this is?

Left Coast's Rebel has a friend who sent him this link about unemployment cheats.

DENVER - He's got jobs to fill, yet one local employer says many applicants will only take the work if the pay is in cash.
That cash, he says, would be paid under the table so the worker can continue to collect unemployment benefits.
A few local industrial companies are starting to see more potential employees trying to cheat the system. Ed Sleeman, owner of Colorado Drywall Supply, posted two new jobs eight months ago.
Dozens of applications later, Sleeman still can't find two qualified truck drivers willing to load and unload building supplies, despite Colorado's 8.4 percent unemployment rate.
And it's not that all of the jobseekers have been unqualified.
Sleeman says about 40 of the applicants have admitted they're unemployed, and are hoping to double dip. "They'll come in and say, 'Well, I'd look at the job but if you could pay me cash I'd take the job so I could keep my unemployment,'" Sleeman said.
Sleeman says he isn't the type of business owner to pay under the table.
"There's no way we would do that," he said.
Sleeman says he's aware double dippers have been approaching other businesses in the industrial sector.

UNEMPLOYMENT STILL RISING

The U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected in November and the unemployment rate rose, dashing hopes that the recovery is gaining momentum.
The U.S. economy added far fewer jobs than expected in November while the
unemployment rate rose to 9.8%, the highest since April,
underlining continued weakness in the labor market. Evan Newmark, Dennis Berman, Steve Russolillo, Phil Izzo and Sudeep Reddy discuss.
Nonfarm payrolls rose by 39,000 last month as private-sector employers added only 50,000 jobs, the Labor Department said Friday. The jobless rate, obtained from a separate household survey, unexpectedly rose to 9.8%, the highest level since April. See more here

Lies, Damn Lies, and Labor Statistics

The labor force participation has now dropped to 64.5%. The long term average is 66%.
What does that mean? It means that 1.5% of the population, roughly 3.5 million people are not being counted as unemployed, even though they are in fact unemployed. They would be people who have been unemployed so long, that they have just given up. There are over 6 million people who have been out of work for more than 6 months
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says
The number of unemployed persons, at 14.8 million, was little changed
in October.
Well if we add in 3.5 million to that number, we are at about 18.3 million unemployed. That would mean that using more realistic numbers, the unemployment rate is actually approaching 12%. There are over 84,878,000 people not in the work force. In the last month of President Bush's term in office, the number was 80,686,000. That is over 4 million people who are no longer in the work force .

Gallup Finds U.S. Unemployment at 10.1% in September

Unemployment, as measured by Gallup without seasonal adjustment, increased to 10.1% in September.....

Underemployment shows a more modest increase to 18.8% in September from 18.6% in August, though it is up from 18.4% in July. Underemployment peaked at 20.4% in April and has yet to fall below 18.3% this year.........

Gallup's modeling of the unemployment rate is consistent with Tuesday's ADP report of a decline of 39,000 private-sector jobs, and indicates that the government's national unemployment rate in September will be in the 9.6% to 9.8% range.

Lies, Damn Lies, And Unemployment Statistics.....

The US lost 125,000 jobs in June.

Lots of Temp jobs ended , but the unemployment rate went down to 9.5%

Why is that?

Because so many more people just gave up. See more here

So they are not counted.

This is how it works.... Mr. John Q. Worker has a job.
He is listed as "employed" by the Department of Labor.
He is laid off.
He starts collecting unemployment.
He is listed as "unemployed" by the Department of Labor.
While he is unemployed, John Q. Workerlooks for a job.
Time goes on. Mr.Worker can't find a job.
He decides that there are no jobs available yet, so he stops looking.
Mr.Worker is no longer "Unemployed". Wooooohooooo ! ! !
He has "dropped out of the workforce."
The Department of Labor does not have to count them anymore.

There are Lies, Damn Lies, and Unemployment statistics.

If it was on a book list, the unemployment numbers would be listed under fiction

Unemployment is actually a benefit says Pelosi

I remember some politician in NY saying that the aftermath of the 1977 blackout was good for the economy. The damages caused an influx of money into the local economy from repairs, new products, etc.. Windows had to be repaired. Stores needed to be rehabilitated. Insurance money came into the city. Lots of money was spent.
BUT....
The idiot forgot to calculate how much was lost or how much was spent on rehab rather than inproving the quality of the products. The store owners now had to include security concerns into their bottom line. They had to contend with higher insurance rates. Many gave up. The main commercial strip in my neighborhood went from vibrant and booming, to boarded up and vacant. Many of the store owners took the insurance money and fled South,West and East. They went to Long Island, South Brooklyn, Staten Island, and New Jersey. It took years for it to return to any semblance of its former self.

Maybe if the government got out of the way, the American people would make the economy work again. Ronald Reagan inherited a far greater mess than President Obama. He got out of the way of American entrepenuers. It started a boom that lasted almost 26 years

Job Losses

While the private sector has lost almost 8 million jobs since the start of the current recession in January 2008, the public sector (Government) has created 590 thousand. Since the passage of the so called stimulus bill in February 2009 the public sector added 400 thousand jobs. The private sector on the other hand has lost 2.65 million jobs since the pork barrel bill was passed.

Sowell Speaks on Government Action

Thomas Sowell Writes...........
Those who think that the stock market crash in October 1929 is what caused the huge unemployment rates of the 1930s will have a hard time reconciling that belief with the data in that table( "Out of Work" by Richard Vedder and Lowell Gallaway).
Although the big stock market crash occurred in October 1929, unemployment never reached double digits in any of the next 12 months after that crash. Unemployment peaked at 9 percent, two months after the stock market crashed-- and then began drifting generally downward over the next six months, falling to 6.3 percent by June 1930.
This was what happened in the market, before the federal government decided to "do something."

What the government decided to do in June 1930-- against the advice of literally a thousand economists, who took out newspaper ads warning against it-- was impose higher tariffs, in order to save American jobs by reducing imported goods.

Unemployment is going to surge

Unemployment is likely to surge above 10 percent during the next few months as millions of “missing” workers return to the labor market.

The spin is “The increase in unemployment is a sign of a stronger job market, but it is also a sign of how weak the job market still is and vulnerable the recovery is to anything that might go wrong,” Economist Mark Zandi wrote in an e-mail to The Hill.

The reality is that unemployment benefits are running out for many unemployed. The workers are now looking for work. There are no jobs out there for most of these folks.
In April, 805,000 workers re-joined the labor pool, causing the unemployment rate to jump to 9.9 percent even as the economy created jobs. It will increase more as more people keep looking for jobs.

Did you know that unemployment hit 17.1%???

Not if you just listen to the mainstream media.
The U.S. jobless rate rose to 9.9% in April, the first increase in three months, but the government’s broader measure of unemployment ticked up for the third month in a row, rising 0.2 percentage point to 17.1%.
Everywhere the press are touting "job growth" and "job creation". Where is the talk about 17.1% of the people out of work?
The President can hype the numbers,"Oh look at all these new jobs." The reality is that there are lots of people still out of work.
The April report showed that the number of people unemployed for 27 weeks or more rose by 169,000 to 6.7 million

Friday, April 2, 2010

The Press is touting the creation of 162,000 jobs.

Not 9.7%.
Unemployment went up to 16.9%

It is great news that many were hired, but.....

88,000 are only temporary.
U.S. employers created jobs at the fastest pace in three years in March, but the unemployment rate held steady at 9.7%, indicating the labor market has still some way to go to recover.

The 2010 decennial Census accounted for 48,000 of the employment boost last month. As those jobs will be lost in the second half of the year, economists cautioned not to read too much into the headline figure. Another 40,000 of the increase came in other temporary jobs.

And more people stopped looking
The so-called underemployment rate--which includes everyone in the official rate plus those who are neither working nor looking for work, but say they want a job and have looked for work recently -- rose to 16.9% in March

Unemployment rate INCREASED from 16.5% to 16.8%

The headlines touted
U.S. jobless rate steady at 9.7%
But the real unemployment went from 16.5% to 16.8%.

The U6 alternative gauge of the unemployment rate, which includes discouraged workers and those forced to work part-time, rose to 16.8% from 16.5%.
U.S. nonfarm payrolls declined for the 25th time in the past 26 months, falling by 36,000 in February

Global Warming Causes February Job Losses. Honest

1) The White House is expecting “unexpectedly” bad unemployment numbers.

2) In preparation for that, Larry Summers is blaming the numbers on the February blizzards.

3) Al Gore explained over the weekend that global warming causes an increase in water vapor and, therefore, more blizzards.

4) Ergo, global warming is to blame for the about-to-be-released unemployment figures.

See the full analysis over at Real Revo

White House is shoveling it high in regard to jobless numbers.

White House economic adviser Larry Summers said on Monday winter blizzards were likely to distort U.S. February jobless figures, which are due to be released on Friday.

"The blizzards that affected much of the country during the last month are likely to distort the statistics. So it's going to be very important ... to look past whatever the next figures are to gauge the underlying trends," Summers said in an interview with CNBC, according to a transcript.

Sounds like there might be a problem that he is trying to smooooooooth over.

9.7% Smells Like BULL**** Too.

"This past January, the economy lost 20,000 jobs, and the unemployment rate dropped to 9.7 percent.according to a press release from the Department of Labor.

Am I the only one who sees something ironic here? We lose 20,000 jobs, but the unemployment rate drops.I have previously stated that 10% unemployment # is BULLS*** Well 9.7% is as much Bull****.
The government said that whoops, we undercounted the number of unemployed for the whole last year. Could you please add 800 thousand or so to the numbers. Oh can you change those seasonally adjusted numbers too?
The Labor of Bureau Statistics admitted 16.1 million classically unemployed Americans for January compared to 14.7 million from the month before. With the miracle of seasonal adjustment, January had 14.8 million Americans unemployed compared to 15.3 million in December. In essence, the unadjusted statistical unemployment rate is now 10.6%. And if we add in those discouraged, we are around 18%.
They are pulling the wool over our eyes

Worried about the economy? Not if you are Federal Employee

2,150,000 Federal Employees ! ! !
The era of big government has returned with a vengeance, in the form of the largest federal work force in modern history.
The Obama administration says the government will grow to 2.15 million employees this year, topping 2 million for the first time since President Clinton declared that "the era of big government is over" and joined forces with a Republican-led Congress in the 1990s to pare back the federal work force. According to the Washington Times

18.5 Million Unemployed

Something Smells on the Sunday Talk Shows

SWELLS LIKE YAK MANURE ! ! !

Politico points out that 3 Obama Officials all gave different numbers about the jobs created

Axelrod, on CNN’s State of the Union: “But understand that, in this recession that began at the beginning of 2007, we've lost 7 million jobs. Now, the Recovery Act the president passed has created more than — or saved more than 2 million jobs. But against 7 million, you know, that — that is — it is cold comfort to those who still are looking.”

Jarrett, on NBC’s Meet the Press: “The Recovery Act saved thousands and thousands of jobs. There are schoolteachers and firemen and— and— teachers all across our country, policemen, who have jobs today because of that recovery act. We're investing in infrastructure. We're investing in public education so that our kids can compete going forth into the next— generation.”

Gibbs, on “Fox News Sunday”: “Well, Chris, let's take for instance the example you just used of the stimulus package. We had four quarters of economic regression in terms of growth, right? Just last quarter, we finally saw the first positive economic job growth in more than a year. Largely as a result of the recovery plan that's put money back into our economy, that saved or created 1.5 million jobs.”

Why do they have different numbers???
Because it it TOTAL BS that they "created or saved" any jobs.
18.5 million people are out of work.
We have been losing jobs almost every month since the Dems took over.

Christina Romer and the White House enter the TWILIGHT ZONE ! ! !

HOW OUT OF TOUCH
WITH REALITY ARE THEY?????

The $787 billion economic stimulus package has created or saved between 1.7 million and 2 million jobs, but its impact on the economy ebbed slightly in the final quarter of 2009 compared with prior months, the White House said Tuesday night.

Christina Romer, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said a third of the tax cuts and spending in the package is out the door. Her office estimates that the stimulus added between 1.5 and 3 percentage points to the growth in gross domestic product in the final quarter of 2009.
It was reported in the Washington Post

Ms. Romer should read 10% unemployment # is BULLS***
There are 18.5 MILLION UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE IN THE US.
That is 7 Million More people than the last day of George Bush. Check the numbers yourself here
Unemployment officially went from 11.40 Million to 15.27 Million. The people "No Longer Looking" increased by 3.26 Million. That is 7 Million people more people who are no longer working.
