Ashley Smithwick said she had never gotten in trouble before and was surprised when the principal opened her lunchbox and found the knife.

The teen was initially given a 10-day suspension, then received notice that she was suspended the rest of the school year.

“I don’t understand why they would even begin to point the finger at me and use me as an example,” she said.

This month, Ashley Smithwick, a soccer player who takes college-level courses, was charged with misdemeanor possession of a weapon on school grounds. She is no longer allowed to set foot on campus.

The reality of ObamaCare

President Obama's Medicare chief, Dr. Donald Berwick, explains, "Traditional medical ethics, based on the doctor-patient dyad must be reformulated...The primary function of regulation in health care, especially as it affects the quality of medical care, is to constrain decentralized individualized decision making.

Translation: "You're not in charge of your health care. Your doctor is not in charge. We are."

Happy "Boxing" Day

I never knew what "Boxing" Day was. I had heard of it, but had no idea what it was honoring. I knew it was celebrated in England. I knew it was the day after Christmas. Other than that, I was only guessing. I thought it had something to do with the Boxer Rebellion. I decided to investigate after a discussion with Augusta Water Cooler.
Well it turns out that it has nothing to do with the Boxer Rebellion. It has nothing to do with boxing. It has to do with boxes. Yes, plain old boxes.
The origins seem to be variations on the idea of "Giving a BOX to the poor, or less fortunate.
Some versions of the origins say it was the custom of the giving a box of goods to your servant or worker the day  after Christmas.
Another is that on the day after Christmas, people went to see their more distant relatives, less important relatives and brought them presents in a box.
Another is that the church opened and distributed the contents of the Alms boxes, or the poor boxes, the day after Christmas.
Wikipedia says Boxing Day is a bank or public holiday that occurs on 26 December, or the first or second weekday after Christmas Day, depending on national laws. It is observed in Australia, Austria, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and in some Commonwealth nations that have a mainly Christian population. In South Africa, the public holiday 26 December is called Day of Goodwill, in Ireland St Stephen's Day or Lá an Dreoilín, and in continental European countries the "Second Christmas Day."

Looking Online for Boxing Day Images, it appears that Boxing Day has to do with sales in stores.

Zdravstvujtye From Staten Island

According to SILive News Story from my old stomping grounds, in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty....
Many Russian immigrants to the "red borough" of Staten Island are flocking to the Republican Party, saying that the national Democrats' "socialistic" policies remind them too much of the top-down oligarchy they fled in their native land.

"We decided we had to support this (Republican)club," said Businessman Arkadiy Fridman, a former Soviet Army officer who came to the United States in 1992. "They are very close to our political and business vision."

In the wake of the national GOP's big wins this year, when the party took back control of the House, Republicans everywhere are more confident that their bedrock message of smaller government and lower taxes will resonate with American voters.

Fridman said that the Democrats "are going in an absolutely different direction," focusing on "income redistribution" and rich-versus-poor "class war."

"It's too socialistic,"
said Fridman, head of the non-profit Staten Island Community Center and president of Citizens Magazine, a public affairs publication. "It's very painful for us to see."

Tuesday coldest day ever recorded in Ireland

THIS DECEMBER has been the coldest on record, with air temperatures over the first 22 days of the month falling 5 to 7 degrees below the mean average, Met Éireann has said.
Head forecaster Gerald Fleming said average daily maximum temperatures of between 2 and 5 degrees and nightly minimum temperatures of -4 to -1 degrees had been recorded at weather stations across Ireland this month.
Mr Fleming said a daily maximum temperature of -9.4 degrees was recorded at Ballyhaise, Co Cavan on Tuesday.

My Congressman,Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte, Gets 112th Congress to Read the Constitution.

The Constitution frequently gets lip service in Congress, but House Republicans next year will make sure it gets a lot more than that - the new rules the incoming majority party proposed this week call for a full reading of the country's founding document on the floor of the House on Jan. 6.The goal, backers said, is to underscore the limited-government rules the Founders imposed on Congress - and to try to bring some of those principles back into everyday legislating.

"It stems from the debate that we've had for the last two years about things like the exercise of authority in a whole host of different areas by the EPA, we've had this debate in relation to the health care bill, the cap-and-trade legislation," said Rep. Robert W. Goodlatte, Virginia Republican, who proposed the reading.

Several Democratic members of Congress, led by Representative Earl Blumenauer of Oregon and Senator John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia, had urged the administration to cover end-of-life planning as a service offered under the Medicare wellness benefit. A national organization of hospice care providers made the same recommendation.

Democrats dropped it from legislation to overhaul the health care system. But the Obama administration will achieve the same goal by regulation, starting Jan. 1.
Under the new policy, outlined in a Medicare regulation, the government will pay doctors who advise patients on options for end-of-life care, which may include advance directives to forgo aggressive life-sustaining treatment.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano scoffs at her bad #'s

The use of full-body scanners and invasive pat-downs at airports around the country will not change for the "foreseeable future," Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

While saying that she is always looking to improve the security systems in place, Napolitano added that the new technology and the pat-downs were "objectively safer for our traveling public."

Napolitano dismissed a recent news report about major airports failing secrets tests designed to get contraband such as guns and knives past security screeners. The report said some airports had a 70 percent failure rate.

"Many of them are very old and out of date and there were all kinds of methodology issues with them. Let's set those aside," she said. "We pick up more contraband with the new procedures and the new machinery."

Napolitano continued, “Listen, we are here today, the commissioner is here and the chief and this is not a time for the media to pick a fight. It’s time to remember a fallen agent.”

Is The Government Overstepping Again?

Four Loko had been the subject of many media reports which suggested that Four Loko's mixture of alcohol and caffeine causes young people to engage in risky behavior.(Excuse me, isn't the drinking of alcohol alone a risky behavior?)The drink was even dubbed "Blackout in a Can," and the story soon moved from newsrooms to Congress, where officials like Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) demanded that it be pulled from shelves.

"We must protect children(Chuck, you have to be 21 to buy Four Loko) from the severe and deadly consequences of drinks like Four Loko," declared Schumer. The Food and Drug Administration agreed, and in November federal regulators banned Four Loko.

Arlen Specter Whines Up His Career.

Instead of going out gracefully, Arlen Specter acted like a spoiled school boy. He whined about how things changed.
Specter whined about losing the Senate where both parties seemed to be interested in finding compromise, and RINO's had a comfy home.
"That conduct was beyond contemplation in the Senate I joined 30 years ago," Specter said. "Collegiality can obviously not be maintained when negotiating with someone simultaneously out to defeat you, especially within your own party."
"Civility is a state of mind," Specter said. "It reflects respect for your opponents and for the institutions you serve together." Political polarization, he said, will make civility in the upcoming Congress "more difficult [but] more necessary than ever."
The former Senate Judiciary Committee chairman then went after the Supreme Court, accusing Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito (both conservatives whom he supported) of "eroding the constitutional mandate of separation of powers."
