Police probe Stockholm blasts as act of terrorism

Stockholm Suicide Bombing

Two nearly simultaneous explosions rocked central Stolkholm on Saturday evening, killing one person and injuring two others in what is believed to be a suicide attack.
Police said on Sunday they were treating bomb blasts in Stockholm as an act of terrorism by a lone attacker that followed an emailed threat referring to Sweden's troops in Afghanistan and to cartoons of Mohammad.

UPDATE:Person arrested for plot to blow up military recruitment center

UPDATE:Mohamed Osman Mohamud, aka Antonio Martinez, was arrested after authorities said he planned the details of the plot, including where to park the van filled with explosives to hurt the most people. Mohamud allegedly believed he was receiving help from a larger ring of jihadists as he communicated with undercover agents.See more here

Authorities say an individual has been arrested in the Baltimore area for plotting to blow up a military recruitment center.

Marcia Murphy, a spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Baltimore, confirms to The Associated Press that an arrest has been made and says the individual will appear in court Wednesday afternoon. Murphy did not provide any further details. An FBI spokesman also confirmed the arrest.

Two bomb attacks on Russian Metro, Politician responses

Two female suicide bombers blew themselves up on packed metro trains in Moscow on Monday, killing at least 38 people near the ex-KGB headquarters and Gorky Park, in attacks blamed on Islamists.

CNN reports Russian investigators combing two subway stations attacked by female suicide bombers think Chechen rebels may have been behind the rush-hour strike that killed dozens of people.

"Our preliminary assessment is that this act of terror was committed by a terrorist group from the North Caucasus region," Alexander Bortnikov of the Federal Security Service said of the investigation at one of the blast sites.

Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, who cemented his power in 1999 by launching a war to crush Chechen separatism, broke off a trip to Siberia, declaring "terrorists will be destroyed."reports the Washington Post

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev later visited the metro station to lay a wreath of red roses on the platform, and vowed "we will find and wipe out" those behind the blasts, calling them "wild beasts".Reports AFP

"The American people stand united with the people of Russia in opposition to violent extremism and heinous terrorist attacks that demonstrate such disregard for human life, and we condemn these outrageous acts," said President Obama in a written statement.

*It would be a win-win for everyone, and there would be belly aching from anyone and this method would eliminate a long and expensive trial.

It is common for us to want to apply simple solutions to complex problems. It sounds simple, but.....
I imagine the cost of such a booth would be astronomical in comparison to present metal detectors.
The lines would be just as long, if not longer.
I can't imagine it being successful against chemicals that need to be mixed before they explode, etc....

President Obama received a high-level briefing only three days before Christmas about possible holiday-period terrorist threats against the U.S., NEWSWEEK has learned. The briefing was centered on a written report, produced by U.S. intelligence agencies, titled "Key Homeland Threats," a senior U.S. official says.

The administration official, who asked for anonymity when discussing sensitive information, says that nowhere in this document was there any mention of Yemen,(How about Nigeria or Denmark?) whose affiliate of Al Qaeda is now believed to have been behind the Christmas Day attempt by Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab to bring down a transatlantic airliner with a bomb hidden in his underpants.However, the official declined to disclose any other information about the substance of the briefing, including what kind of specific warnings, if any, the president was given about possible holiday attacks and whether Yemen came up during oral discussions.......

Chris Dodd trashes Aviation Security by $4,500,000

Senator Chris Dodd, D-Conn., proposed an amendment reducing aviation security appropriations by $4.5 million in favor of firefighter grants

(Purpose: To provide additional funds for FIRE grants under section 33 of the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974)

On page 77, between lines 16 and 17, insert the following:

SEC. X (a) The amount appropriated under the heading "firefighter assistance grants'' under the heading "Federal Emergency Management Agency'' under by title III for necessary expenses for programs authorized by the Federal Fire Prevention and Control Act of 1974 is increased by $10,000,000 for necessary expenses to carry out the programs authorized under section 33 of that Act (15 U.S.C. 2229).

(b) The total amount of appropriations under the heading "Aviation Security'' under the heading "Transportation Security Administration'' under title II, the amount for screening operations and the amount for explosives detection systems under the first proviso under that heading, and the amount for the purchase and installation of explosives detection systems under the second proviso under that heading are reduced by $4,500,000.

(c) From the unobligated balances of amounts appropriated before the date of enactment of this Act for the appropriations account under the heading "state and local programs'' under the heading "Federal Emergency Management Agency'' for "Trucking Industry Security Grants'', $5,500,000 are rescinded.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says there is no indication that the man who attempted to destroy an airliner in Detroit on Christmas Day is part of a larger terrorist plot. (Except for all those attacks on the Trade Center, The Cole, The Marine Barracks, etc...)
Napolitano refused to say whether Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has a connection to al-Qaida.
Napolitano says that despite the terrorist getting dangerous chemicals on board the plane, commercial flying is still safe.

Reuters reports Dutch military police are investigating claims that an accomplice may have helped Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab board Northwest Flight 253 in Amsterdam on Christmas day without a passport, a story first told on MLive.com..........
The military police have already said Abdulmutallab did not go through passport control at Schiphol when he arrived from Lagos......
Kurt Haskell of Newport, Mich.... and his wife, Lori, were returning from a safari in Uganda when they boarded the NWA flight on Friday.

Haskell said he and his wife were sitting on the ground near their boarding gate in Amsterdam, which is when they saw Mutallab approach the gate with an unidentified man.....
While Mutallab was poorly dressed, his friend was dressed in an expensive suit, Haskell said. He says the suited man asked ticket agents whether Mutallab could board without a passport. “The guy said, 'He's from Sudan and we do this all the time.'”
