I'm in favor of a progressive fuel tax. Owners of gas guzzlers pay more in taxes at the pump then do owners of fuel efficient vehicles. Why should the owner of a fuel efficient vehicle pay the same tax as the owner of gas guzzler?
If the goal is to lessen our dependence on foreign oil, fuel efficiency is good, and gas guzzling is bad. If I can get to work at 50 MPG while you insist on getting there at 10 MPG shouldn't you be penalized? 5 foreign crude oil conscious people could get to work for the same amount of foreign crude oil it takes for you to get to work.
If you pay, 17.5 cents per gallon on gasoline and u travel 50 miles to work, you paid 17.5 cents in tax to get to work. The SUV owner used 5 gallons of gas and thus paid 87 cents to get to work. Your tax is already in effect. He paid 5 times as much as you did. Correct?
