House Democratic officials say the party has averted a leadership struggle in advance of next week's party elections.

Under the agreement, they say Rep. James Clyburn has agreed to drop his challenge to Rep. Steny Hoyer to become second in command. Instead, Clyburn will be elected to a new position one rung lower on the leadership ladder.
